Why do cats sit on laps?

Why do Cars Sit on Laps, a Guide by the Cool Cat Club

Cats have no shortage of odd and bewildering behaviours. Many, if not most, are mysteries we can only speculate on, since cats haven’t mastered the ability to speak yet (although there’s an abundance of YouTube videos that imply they may be catching on). Although experts in the field of feline research have their theories, with varying degrees of evidence to support their explanations, we beg the question: why do cats sit on laps?

The reasons behind their behaviour and actions inevitably will depend on your cat’s particular personality. Take, for example, your cat’s propensity or lack thereof to spend time perched upon your lap. This is usually a sure sign of the trust, affection, and dependence they feel toward you. Cats are only comfortable in close proximity with those that make them feel safe and secure. Regardless of any other motivations they may have, you can be confident in the bond you share with your feline friend if they’re fond of snuggling up to you.

Any space that is warm and cosy will draw the attention of a cat, and you are most definitely warm and cosy. Especially if the rest of the house is chilly and there are no inviting sunbeams to bask in, your body heat is going to create an immensely appealing napping space.

Furthermore, the social behaviours of cats can vary wildly, but if yours tends toward the most sociable end of the spectrum they may be on your lap because they want your attention. These loving snugglers desire connection and interaction, and can be quite vocal and in your face when demanding it. Paradoxically, there are times when a cat has forced their way into your space, yet winds up biting you while on your lap. This is likely due to overstimulation or overexcitement rather than malice; give them a bit of space to calm themselves down.

The places that cats prefer to roost are well known and range from sunny windowsills, piles of warm laundry, and the coveted throne that is the highest top shelf they can reach. Granted warmth, affection, and comfort, the reason your cat chooses your lap over every other favoured resting place in the home is clear and simple: they love you! To them, you are family, practically another cat. You are the perfect napping spot, the safest place to rest, and their favourite companion.

As far as they are concerned, you are their top shelf. Remember that next time they decide to curl up in your space, and give them an extra-loving snuggle.
